The IT Crowd
I've been rewatching episodes of one of my favorite comedy TV series, The IT Crowd. If you want to know my sense of humor, this is a good show to watch. I've watched it numerous times, and it still makes me a laugh. I also have a handful of favorite episodes I watch often when I need a pick-me-up.
The IT Crowd is a British comedy series. I quite like British humor anyway, but there is something both quirky and smart about the series that just makes me laugh. My only regret is that there are only 25 episodes. Each of the four seasons was only six episodes each and then they did one special for their last episode.
I was first introduced to The IT Crowd right before my mom died. A friend at work—I was at the MGM Grand at the time—told me about and said he thought I would find it hilarious. He was right.
The show saved my sanity at that time. Mom's impending death was unexpected, and it was a very sad time. I remember sitting in the hospital, and later in the assisted living facility when she was in hospice, watching this show that made me laugh so hard all knowing full well my mom and friend would be leaving this world soon. It was such a strange dichotomy.
There's something about British humor that I often feel trumps American humor. I feel the British sometimes take time with their jokes that Americans would barrel through.
For example, here is the first episode of The IT Crowd on YouTube:
And here is an almost shot-for-shot, word-for-word American pilot version—with one of the British cast members, Richard Ayoade, no less—and it is pretty terrible. They managed to suck all of the best humor out of it.
I think the lead actors of the British series: Katherine Parkinson, Richard Ayoade, Chris O'Dowd, Chris Morris, Matt Berry, and Noel Fielding are just so funny. The writing is clever, fun, and humorous.
My favorite episodes are "The Work Outing" and "The Dinner Party" (season 2), "Tramps Like Us" (Season 3), and "Italian for Beginners" (season 4). I know the show's humor won't be everybody's bag, but I love it, and I'm enjoying re-watching the whole series again.
Here are some other shows that make me laugh a lot:
Death at A Funeral (the British version, although directed by an American, Frank Oz, the voice of Miss Piggy, Grover, and Yoda)
Flight of the Conchords
Waiting for Guffman
Monty Python and The Holy Grail
It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
The Great Race
Just about anything with Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin
9 to 5
What's Up, Doc?
This Is Spinal Tap
The Princess Bride
Only Murders in The Building
Middleditch and Schwartz
I Love Lucy
The Dick Van Dyke Show
Everybody Loves Raymond
Those are just a few that represent my sense of humor. If you need a laugh or a pick-me-up, those are some of my recommendations—especially The IT Crowd.
