Don't Forget Yourself

At my job Omega Mart, I often see the following sign:

I think in life we often forget who we really are. Our society, upbringing, and experiences cloud our vision and distort our reality.

I find it no coincidence I came across this thought the other day:

Some time in the future I plan to write a blog post about truth and reality as we see it through the lens of our experiences and perceptions and how what we perceive or believe to be true may, in fact, not be true at all even though our reality would 100% convince us that it is.

Sometimes when I'm watching a newborn or young child, so full of innocence, trust, wonder, playfulness, curiosity, and pure, unconditional love, I am reminded of who we are. Not even who we were. But who we still are. It's just buried under the conditioning and programming we have received from the world.

I think if all of us really comprehended what amazing, powerful, limitless, eternal beings of light and love we actually are, we would be stunned. I also think so many of the petty and trivial things we deem important would fall by the wayside. We would see ourselves as we are truly meant to. All the baggage we carry would be no more.

I like the phrase in the thought above, returning to yourself. It reminds me from that scene in The Lion King when Mufasa tells Simba, "You have forgotten who you are and so have forgotten me. Look inside yourself... You are more than what you have become. ...Remember who you are. You are my son and the one true king. Remember who you are...Remember."

We are more than who we think we are. We have simply forgotten. We just need to be reminded. Don't forget yourself.
